Grid-tied Solar Power Systems

Cascadia Solar installs grid-tied solar power systems throughout Jefferson, Kitsap, and Clallam counties. Grid-tied solar systems are connected directly to your utility’s electrical grid, using electricity from both the solar panel system and the electrical grid.

If needed, your home can draw energy from the grid on cloudy days or at night, when solar panels are not producing at full efficiency. Likewise, if your solar panels are producing more energy than is needed, that excess energy will be fed back into the grid, which reduces your electricity bill!

How a Grid-Tied Solar System Works

The DC (direct current) electricity produced by your solar panels is inverted into alternating current (AC) electricity that can be used in your home. The AC electricity flows into your circuit panel and is available for any active electric loads.

If your solar production exceeds your demand, then the extra solar electricity is routed from your home out to the grid. A separate meter tracks this exported electricity. This is called net metering, and at the end of the month the utility will determine the difference between your solar production and electrical consumption, and you either earn a credit or are billed accordingly.

What Happens If The Power Goes Out?

Because grid-tied systems are part of the electric grid, they will shut down when the connection to the utility is lost. This is a safety regulation that prevents PV systems from accidentally back-feeding into the grid and causing damage or injury. However, if you wish to maintain electricity in the event of a power outage, it is possible integrate battery storage with a grid-tied system.
