Grid-Tied Solar Power Systems
Cascadia Solar installs grid-tied solar power systems in Jefferson, Kitsap, and Clallam counties. A grid-tied solar power system is connected to your utility’s electrical grid via your electrical panel and reduces your bill by directly powering your home.
How Does a Grid-Tied Solar Work?
The DC (direct current) electricity produced by your solar panels is inverted into alternating current (AC) electricity that can be used in your home. The AC electricity is synchronized with the grid electricity so that it can flow into your electrical panel and power any active electric loads.
When your grid-tied solar system is generating more power than your home or business uses, the excess power goes back to the grid, and you will be credited for this power production on your utility bill. Like a farmer makes hay in the summer and stores it in the hay barn to feed livestock through the winter, grid-tied solar owners harvest the abundant summer sunlight and store excess net-metering credits with their electric utility for use during the shorter days of winter.
What Happens If The Power Goes Out?
Because grid-tied systems are part of the electric grid, they will shut down when the connection to the utility is lost. This is a safety regulation that prevents PV systems from accidentally back-feeding into the grid and causing damage or injury while line workers are making repairs. However, if you wish to maintain electricity in the event of a power outage, it is possible to integrate battery storage with a grid-tied system.
