How Solar Battery Storage Works

Solar batteries store electricity for later use. There are three types of solar battery backup systems: 1) grid-tied solar panels with battery backup, 2) standalone solar batteries, and 3) off-grid solar PV systems with batteries.

Grid-Tied Solar Panels with Battery Backup

Grid-tied solar batteries connect to a grid-tied solar panel system. They work by storing electricity generated by your solar panels, which creates a bank of stored energy that can be used during a power outage.

Without battery storage, grid-tied solar systems automatically shut off during a power outage for safety reasons. But by adding a backup battery, your solar system is able to continue to power your home and charge your battery when the grid is down, extending the amount of time your home can stay powered. The duration of backup depends on how many batteries you have, what loads you want powered by your battery system, and how much solar power you are generating.

If you dislike how noisy generators are or the smell of exhaust fumes, battery backup with solar panels can be a good alternative to a home standby generator.

Standalone Battery Storage Systems

Standalone batteries are not connected to solar panels. Instead, they connect to the main electric grid and can charge from it, creating a bank of stored electricity you can use during a power outage. A standalone battery can be a good alternative to a gas or propane generator for many homes.

For standalone battery storage systems not connected to a solar system, the duration of backup depends on how many batteries you have as well as what you are powering during an outage.

Battery Add-Ons for Existing Solar Panel Systems

If you already have solar panels, you may be able to add battery storage. Adding a battery will increase your energy independence, give you backup power during grid outages, and help you get more value from the solar system you already own.

Off-Grid Solar PV Systems with Batteries

Off-grid solar energy systems are not connected to the main electric grid. They are an excellent option for homes and businesses in very remote locations that don’t have access to the utility grid.

However, Cascadia Solar does not install off-grid solar PV systems.

Solar Battery Rebates & Incentives

You may be eligible for rebates and incentives to reduce the cost of your solar battery installation. You can qualify for battery rebates whether you’re installing solar plus storage for the first time, adding batteries to your existing solar panels, or installing standalone battery storage.

PSE’s Flex Batteries Program

Puget Sound Energy (PSE) customers who install an eligible battery system can participate in Flex Batteries and receive incentives. You’ll earn up to $1,000 when you enroll your battery and additional incentives when you participate in Flex events. If you qualify for Enhanced Incentives, you can earn up to $10,000 just for enrolling.

Tesla Powerwall Rebate

Tesla is currently offering a $1,000 rebate for Tesla Powerwall 3 installation. To qualify, you must order your Powerwall by March 30, 2026 and install it by September 30, 2026.

Our Commitment to Local Resiliency

Cascadia Solar and Frederickson Electric are committed to being a part of local resiliency efforts. We have been a part of multiple solar battery installations in the region to keep important community resources powered during outages.

A few examples include a battery backup system for the East Jefferson Fire Rescue station on Marrowstone Island, which allows first responders to keep working during the prolonged power outages that are frequent for this isolated community. Another solar battery system that we proudly installed was for Bethany Lutheran Church on Bainbridge Island, which is a designated resiliency center for the community during emergencies. Their new solar and battery system will keep the power on, allowing the public to gather and share information during emergencies.
