Solar Panels are the Star of Washington’s New Energy Code

Washington State’s new residential and commercial energy codes officially went into effect in March of 2024, and solar enthusiasts should be excited! The updated code requires clean energy generation systems like solar panels for commercial buildings over 10,000 square feet and strongly incentivizes solar installation for residential new construction.

These changes are another step in the right direction for Washington State as it continues to work toward its goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions 95% by 2050.

Key Changes to Washington State Energy Code

The new energy code includes several provisions that promote energy efficiency and renewable energy generation in new construction projects, but there are two standout changes.

1. Residential Projects Earn Up to 4.5 Energy Credits for Solar Installation

Residential new construction projects are required to earn a certain number of energy credits. Energy credits can be earned for including energy efficient features in the building plans, such as high-efficiency HVAC systems and appliances. Solar panels used to qualify for just 3 energy credits, but under the new code, they’ll qualify for up to 4.5 energy credits, which is the highest amount of credits that can be earned for a single feature. This change makes solar panel installation the fastest way for residential construction projects to earn their required credits and in a way that will pay for itself over time.

2. Solar Panels Required for Large Commercial Buildings

For the first time ever, new commercial buildings in Washington State will be required to install a clean energy generation system, such as solar panels. The mandate applies to commercial buildings larger than 10,000 square feet and requires that they generate at least 0.5W per square foot. There are some exceptions for buildings with significant shading or roof space limitations, but buildings that qualify for an exception will be required to obtain 18 additional energy credits.

How Many Energy Credits Do I Need for My New Home?

All newly constructed single-family homes in Washington State must achieve a certain number of energy credits based on the size of the home.

How to Claim Energy Credits with a Solar Energy System

Cascadia Solar makes it easy to claim your energy credits.

  1. Preliminary Assessment – Start by sharing your building plans and property address with our team. Using satellite imagery, we’ll create a model of your home or building and conduct an initial shading assessment to determine solar potential.
  2. Site Evaluation – Next, we’ll visit your site to ensure the accuracy of our model and assess the amount of sunlight available. This can be done even before construction, provided that any trees slated for removal have already been cleared.
  3. Design – We’ll collaborate with you on design considerations, ensuring that the system aligns with your aesthetic preferences while offering expert guidance on optimizing solar production. Factors such as roof pitch and orientation will be carefully evaluated to maximize efficiency.
  4. Documentation – Once the final design is approved, we’ll prepare all necessary technical documentation for submission to your local building department. This ensures a smooth process for claiming your energy credits and moving forward with your solar installation.
