When’s the Best Time to Install Solar Panels?

If you want to install solar panels but are waiting for the perfect time, we have good news for you—now is the perfect time!

Electricity rates aren’t going down (in fact, they’re going up), and the sooner you go solar, the sooner you can start saving on those costs.

That’s not to say you should rush into a solar installation if you’re not ready. It’s a big decision, and it’s important to weigh the costs and benefits carefully. But if you’ve done all that, it’s time to take the plunge.

Here’s why.

5 Reasons Why Now Is a Perfect Time to Go Solar

1. Electricity Costs Keep Climbing

We’re using more electricity than ever before these days, and it’s getting more expensive. In July, the Jefferson County PUD implemented a 9% rate increase, with additional 7% hikes scheduled for 2026, 2027, and 2028.

Rising energy prices aren’t unique to our area, either. US electricity prices have increased faster than the rate of inflation every year since 2022, according to the Energy Information Administration.

The reality is that the longer you wait, the more you’ll pay your utility in the meantime. Installing solar now locks in more affordable and predictable energy costs, and protects you from future utility rate increases.

2. Solar is More Affordable Than Ever (For Now)

Solar panel installation costs have come down a lot since they first became mainstream. In Washington, prices have fallen by 42% over the past ten years, making rooftop solar far more accessible than it used to be.

Over the past several years, however, costs have flattened out. We even saw a slight uptick between 2024 and 2025.

Right now, you’re in a great position to take advantage of today’s relatively low prices before any future supply chain issues or policy changes send them back up.

3. Solar Technology Is Already Excellent

We often hear from homeowners that they want to go solar but are waiting for the technology to get better. But the thing is, solar technology is already advanced. Solar has been a mainstream home upgrade for over two decades, and we’ve been installing systems since 2008.

Today’s panels are highly efficient and can generate more power in less space than the models that came before them. The Silfab solar panels we install even have special features that increase shade-tolerance, so they can produce power even in a cloudy, forested environment like ours.

The technology will continue to improve, of course, but not quickly or significantly enough to make it worth waiting for.

4. Lock in Solar Incentives While You Can

Solar incentives are tied to federal, state, and local policies, which means they can always change.

Right now, Washington has a strong net metering program. You can export the extra electricity your solar panels generate to the electric grid, and your utility will credit you at the full retail price for the power you send them. Those credits offset the cost of electricity you buy when your solar panels aren’t producing electricity.

But net metering might not always be around. Legislative discussions in recent years suggest the program could be reduced or phased out over time. Several states, including California and Arizona, have already begun rolling back their net metering policies. Installing solar now lets you lock in current benefits while they’re still available.

5. Be Ready for Peak Solar Generation Season

Solar panels generate electricity year-round, even when it’s cloudy. But they generate the most electricity during the summer when the days are longer and sunnier. A lot of our customers see significantly reduced and even $0 usage costs during the summer.

Installing your system sooner means you can start producing your own power right away and be ready to take full advantage of those peak summer months when they roll around.
